The Monday group is led by Nell Ellis-Jones, a trained and experienced Steiner kindergarten teacher and parent & child leader. The Tuesday group is led by Soili Smurthwaite, a trained and experienced Steiner class teacher with experience of the early years setting. The cost is £7 per session, payable half-termly in advance, and each session is limited to a maximum of 14 families.
Each session begins with playtime and includes craft activities and occasional bread making. The craft activity is there as much for the adults as the children. If your child wants to get involved as well that's fine but they might be just as happy to play. In Steiner early years we wait for the child to want to join in out of imitation. However please do keep an eye on your child and make sure he/she isn't hurting or damaging anyone/anything.
In the middle of the session we sit together for nursery rhymes, seasonal songs and games suitable for the very young child. If your child still wants to play, do help your child to join in by sitting them on your lap quietly. Without the distraction of children running about, we can all breathe in some peacefulness. It will also help us calmly move to the tables for snack time.
The shared snack is around 11am. We like this to be a special time for the children. We sit around the table together and a candle is lit before singing a blessing. Please help your child to stay sitting quietly at the table until we join hands for a thank-you. Organic rice cakes with dairy-free spread and fruit spread are provided together with fruit tea for the children and a choice of teas/coffee for the adults. Parents are asked to bring a piece of fruit each week to share with the group. There are plenty of natural playthings, so it is helpful if toys and food are not brought from home with the exception, of course, of feeding bottles and security items like blankets and cuddlies.
After tidy up time, during which a couple of the parents are asked to help with washing/drying up, the session ends with a final goodbye song. Please make sure your child is equipped with wellies, rainproof clothing and warm jumpers, hats, etc, in colder weather.
