Young Lambeth Cooperative
Organisation
Service overview
Service Description:
Local adults and young people have joined forces with the council to get the YLC off the ground as a completely independent, community owned organisation which once in place will see its members deciding what play and youth services are provided in the borough. More than a year ago the council began conversations with a whole range of service users/providers, local partners and other community members about different ways to manage youth and play services previously run by the council. The shared view was that local people want more say in how money is spent and how services are run in Lambeth. From this the YLC was born, providing an alternative to managing, commissioning and planning youth services in the borough and ever since young people and the community have played a crucial role in working with the council to take the concept forward.

Once in place the YLC have a budget of up to £6 million for services and activities for local children and young people and its members will decide how this money is spent.

Perhaps the most exciting development so far happened on 14 January 2013 when the council's Cabinet approved progression of the YLC to its next stages of development; to set up as an organisation in its own right and begin writing of the business planning. Registration will be taking place any day now and this will enable the official YLC membership launch to follow so keep your eyes peeled! The completed business plan will be presented to Lambeth's Cabinet in the summer for a decision to be made about the council providing funding for the YLC. Once approval is received for this, the YLC will be able to begin its commissioning activity.

Around 20 committed young people ranging in age from 11-19 have been stuck in right from the get go on everything from collaborating with local designers on the YLC branding and logo, to working with lawyers to put together the constitution (legal document setting out the rules of the YLC). Equally, we have a strong and focussed group of adults (residents and service providers) who have been involved from the outset in offering their knowledge, skills and experiences to help turn the YLC concept into a reality. These people of a variety of ages and walks of life, are breathing fresh air into a completely new and innovative way of working right here on our doorsteps in Lambeth to make things happen for the benefit of our local children and young people.
