Service overview

Service Description:
Our services
Refuge supports 3,000 women and children on any given day through a range of services, including refuges, independent advocacy, community outreach and culturally specific services. Click here to find out more about our services.

Working with families to effect change
Two women a week are killed by a current or former partner every week in England and Wales – leaving two families every week bereaved due to domestic violence. Refuge supports families who have lost a loved one to domestic violence.

Campaigns
Refuge’s award winning campaigns aim to educate the general public and ultimately prevent domestic violence by ensuring that women have the information and support they need to plan a safe escape. Click here to read about our prevention and education campaigns.

Lobbying
Refuge provides a voice for women and children experiencing domestic violence, and ensures that their needs are represented at the highest possible level. Read more about our work with MPs, ministers and policy-makers here.

Research and publications
Refuge produces research into the effects of domestic violence and the issues surrounding service provision. Click here to read our reports and publications.

Training

Commitment to quality
At Refuge we do not believe that ‘one size fits all’. We respond to the individual needs of every woman and child that we support.

What we believe
Refuge is committed to a world where domestic violence is not tolerated and where women and children can live in safety.

We aim to empower women and children to rebuild their lives, free from violence and fear. We provide a range of life-saving and life-changing services, and a voice for the voiceless.

How will we achieve our mission?
Refuge operates a three-pronged approach which involves:

- Provision: Providing a range of high quality services for abused women and children. Our national network of services supports women and children to regain control of their lives and move forwards in a positive way.

- Protection: Advocating for improvements to domestic violence policy and practice, and the implementation of legislation to meet the needs of abused women and children. Encouraging other agencies to develop best practice services and approaches.

- Prevention: Helping to prevent domestic violence through campaigning, education, training and research. We work in partnership with other agencies to raise awareness of domestic violence, its causes and solutions.
