Service overview
Service Description:VRH is national charity that provides early intervention and support for children aged 6-11, identified by the schools as having poor literacy skills, lacking in confidence and self-esteem. We train volunteer reading mentors to engage with children in primary school, who help them overcome the difficulties they face learning to read. Mentors provide dedicated one-to-one support to the children to help them develop skills and confidence around literacy. With their support children develop the confidence and motivation to engage with learning so they can fulfil their potential.
Additionally we have also developed a training programme for parents/carers. Reach Out And Read training (ROAR) gives parents the skills, techniques and confidence to engage with their child’s reading and learning at home. Working with schools and Sure Start centres to deliver the training, we help demystify the reading process for parents, so that they have the confidence to take an active role in their children’s learning
